Latin in Irish Birth Certificate

Latin in Irish Birth Certificate

Postby Lawrence492 » Tue Jul 10, 2012 8:24 pm

I found what I think is my g g grandparents marriage in a parish register in Kilronan, County Roscommon, Ireland dating from 1841. What I didn't expect was that the entries (I also found some childrens' baptisms there) would be entered in latin. The marriage entry I am interested in has the following phrase in it 'sanguinitatis gratibus', which I think relates (no pun intended) to the participants perhaps being close blood relations, maybe first cousins. Has anyone else come acroos this phrase and, if so, what might it mean?

Finally got my trip to the ancestral home of Kilronan, County Roscommon. The latin in the baptism record (not birth certificate!) refers to the fact that the bride and groom were related by blood. In this case, because there was also the figures 3+3 in the record, this indicated that they were third cousins. I wonder how many people nowadays even know who their third cousins are! The reference to 'Rev D D Higgins' in the record referred to the local Bishop who gave the dispensation.
