Granny Fox Oak Tree Issue 26 Oct 2011

Postby RobertF485 » Wed Nov 23, 2011 7:26 pm

Dear All,

My first post and I'm new to family history and have just joined the WLFHS. I am researching the life of my grandfather, Thomas Weston Miln Forsyth, who lived at Knysna Bank in Station Road, Broxburn in the early 1900s (along with his parents and siblings). A couple of years ago, my wife and I journeyed from Sussex (where we live) to visit Broxburn and to look for the house (we were attending a family wedding so used the opportunity). We couldn't find it, but Sybil Cavanagh very kindly took some photos of it in the pouring rain! We shall be visiting again next year hopefully and I hope I might even be able to make a meeting.

Anyway... I was intrigued to read the article on 'Granny Fox' in The Oak Tree 26 by Elizabeth Fraser. Elizabeth mentions a '...small booklet produced by a young man who has written two books on Broxburn and Uphall.' As a matter of interest, would anyone have an idea as to what books Elizabeth is referring to? (I have the book by Peter Morton).

Many thanks for any suggestions.

Robert,
I emailed Elizabeth and here is her reply.

Peter Caldwell is the author's name ( and another small publication of photographs Old Broxburn and Uphall under the name of Peter Morton). I
believe the first two books a "History of Broxburn" and "Strathbrock Castle and the History of Uphall" are in Broxburn Library.

If you email Sybil (sybil.cavanagh@westlothian.gov.uk) she may be able to tell you if you can buy these books.

Robert
These books, A History of Broxburn, and Strathbrock Castle and the History of Uphall by Peter Caldwell. Peter Morton is the pen name of Peter Caldwell that he used for the book of old photographs.

The Caldwell books are out of print, but Sybil has said that if you request them at your local library and tell them that West Lothian Libraries have copies, she is willing to lend them through the inter library loans scheme.
