Dickie

Post by JimD246 »

I recently received a copy of a certificate for an Andrew Dickie born in Broxburn from one of our overseas members. Andrew was awarded this certificate in British Columbia by the Bridgeport Examining Board in 1906 where he would appear to have been a miner. Does anyone have an Andrew Dickie in their tree, unfortunately there is no record of his age or other family members.

Jim,
There is an attestation paper, on the Archives Canada website {and Ancestry} for the Canadian Army under the name of Andrew Dickie. It states he was born in Broxburn on 9th October, 1897, his mother was Mrs. A. Dickie. Andrew's occupation is given as 'teamster'. He would have been young in 1906 to be a miner {if this is him}, perhaps he was a 'minor'.

Allan

Thanks Allan but this Andrew was most likely a miner as the document was issued under The Coal Mines Regulation Act giving him a certificate of competency as a miner allowing him to TAKE CHARGE (in bold letters on the certificate) of a "working face". He had to take an examination to be awarded this certificate. The copy was taken in the Merritt Museum in British Columbia.
Was there any mention of a father in Andrew's records, perhaps it might be him?

Jim.

Jim,
Andrew's father was also called Andrew, and he was a miner! They are both shown in the 1901 Census {Scotland} and the 1911 Census {Canada}, living in Merrtt. Andrew junior's mother was called Mary, despite being referred to as Mrs. A. {for Andrew} Dickie.

Regards,

Allan
